Can't. Stop. Laughing.

My wonderful friend Tenley alerted me to this hilarious video. I literally laughed out loud; I laughed so hard I cried. Then again, I tend to find chinchillas very comical...check it out:

soo hungry! Ghana, where are you?

God, why am I always hungry? I long since stopped growing, and it's not like I actually do anything. All I do is breathe. Well, to be honest, I do slightly more than that. I also sleep like mad, eat, wash the dishes, shower, and surf the net. That is all that I do. And yet, I am always ravenous.
Anyway, my current hunger has led me to crave Ghanaian food. mmm, yummy. In case you're wondering why I crave such a thing, let me let you in on a little secret: I'm Ghanaian. So this craving is kinda normal, I guess. True, I consider myself American first and I haven't been to Ghana since I was 12–6 years ago–, but I've still got some Ghana in me. Sadly, it is only in my mind, and not in my stomach. As a way to torture myself, and to educate you, here's a rundown of all the things that I miss:

Fufu and soup:
Fufu is basically what happens when you take boiled cassava/yams/unripe plantains, pound them in a mortar and pestle, and add water every now and then until it becomes this chewy, soft, sticky, mass that you shape into a big ball/oval. Then you eat it with soup of your choice, with your hands. Technically, it's a faux pas if you actually chew the fufu instead of straight up swallowing it whole. However, I think it's an even bigger faux pas to choke and die, so I say fuck it and I chew the damn thing; at least I'm alive, bitches! It's possible to make fufu from a box, by boiling the flakes inside, but 1) that's not the same and 2) it's gross.

Red red: this is fried ripe plantains with bean stew, and it is the most awesome thing in the world. It's called red red because the plantains have a sort of red tinge to them when fried, and you use Palm Oil in the stew, which gives that a red color. Together, they are red red. Also, you can cook the plantains in Palm oil as well, which gives them an even BETTER red color and taste. The only downside is that the oil isn't the best for you. I don't want to go into how much more fat and cholesterol it has when compared to regular vegetable oil. This means you can't go crazy and fry everything in it, though it makes stuff so much tastier.

Jollof Rice: basically rice with veggies and meat. It's kind of like West African paella. Love how much room for creativity it gives you. I've seen jollof made with cinnamon, shrimp, beef, chicken, veggies/no veggies, super spicy/very mild, etc. I love how much the color varies, from brown to soft orange, to a fiery red-orange. And I love how good it is. Pretty much what you do is you heat up some oil, add onions, tomato paste, water, then tomatoes and peppers/whatever spice you want. Then, you add rice. The neat part is that the water and heat will cook the rice, which absorbs all the liquid and flavor and coloring, leaving it orangey. You also add your veggies (I prefer corn, green beans, and tomatoes) and meat (shrimp, chicken, canned corned beef, etc) while stirring the whole thing around and around to mix evenly. Then you pat it down, add some water on the top, cover it up and let it finish cooking. Then you nom nom nom to your heart's content. Isn't it so vibrant and pretty?

well, that's all for now. I'm super hungry now and I think I'll go make me some pancakes ( I know, that's nowhere near Ghanaian. whatever. Maybe I'll have another Ghana Food post later on...hope you find something you like!

music of the day

Back to Black by Amy Winehouse: Another song I'm listening to because it's on my Gossip Girl mix. I feel so conflicted about Amy Winehouse; her voice is killer and her songs are great, but then there's...her. Sweet, sad, fucked-up her. Whose name is really nothing but a sign. Anyways, this is such an awesome song, in it's sadness and resignation. I like how the underlying beat is actually kinda cheerful, but then the song is so depressing. Glance at the lyrics: "I love you so much/it's not enough/ You love blow and I love puff/ And life is like a pipe/ And I'm a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside". Le sigh. I loved these lyrics even more when I thought she said "and I love Poe"...oh well. The creep factor of the tiny penny keeps me going.

U R A Fever by The Kills: This song is awesome. It sounds so...dirty. And not in a sexual way; I just think the band would be these unwashed, delirious people or something. I also love it not just because it was from Gossip Girl, but also because I think of it as the character Georgina Sparks' theme song. It's that crazy song that plays when Serena confides to Blair that she "killed someone"-scoff. And I'm pretty sure it plays also when Chuck and Georgina are returning to NYC in a cab. It works so perfectly for Georgina, because she's like this feverish creature, trying to re-infect Serena, who only wanted her when she had a "fever"...go to Television Without Pity if this confuses you. Jacob there is a super recapper. Peek at le lyrics: "Dancing on the legs of a new-born pony/Left right left right/Keep it up son/Go ahead and have her.../Go ahead and leave her/You only ever had her/When you were a fever".
Here it is:

Paralyzer by Finger Eleven: Another GG song. I just am HOOKED on this song. It's such a pump up song, with a catchy chorus. The guy screams the chorus, how could you not love it? And it played when Blair crashed Jenny's party and took down Asher. So...yeah. Lyrics: "If your body matches/What your eyes can do/You’ll probably move right through/Me on my way to you". Also, the video is pretty cool. Some dude danced in a suit in a street...then other people join him. I'm a sucker for dancing; mainly because I suck at it.
Here you go:

Bad Things by Jace Everett: Aw man, now this is dirty. Obviously it's all sexual and whatnot, but it feels like the Dirty South. And it's the True Blood theme song, so that just adds an extra layer of coolness. His voice is deep, twangy, and suggestive. If I were the type to swoon, I would. Lyrics: " When you came in the air went out./And every shadow filled up with doubt./I don't know who you think you are,/But before the night is through,/I wanna do bad things with you."

I love good lyrics

Painting by Chagall, by The Weepies: Ahh, I love The Weepies. If you don't know them, don't let the name fool you: this is no emo group about sadness and despair! Something about the lead singer's voice is so wonderful. Is it reedy? I'm not sure that's the right word for it, but it's awesome. It's sweet and dreamy , and I like the song's imagery. A look at the lyrics: "We float like two lovers in a Painting by Chagall/ all around is sky and blue town/ holding these flowers for a wedding gown/ We live so high above the ground, satellites surround us"

Nobody Knows Me At All by The Weepies: I know, I know. This title is hardly non-emo sounding. But this is really a beautiful song, with just the right mix of sad/sweet. I mean how can you not like lyrics that go "I don't give a damn, I'm happy as a clam!/ Nobody knows me at all"?
Also, the link for this is a video some people made that I rather like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBzA76QGgz8

L.E.S. Artistes by Santigold: Love, love, love this song. Amazing, riveting voice that I'm not even sure is singing, à la Tegan and Sara? Check. Great lyrics? Check. Catchy beat? Check. Hurrah! I only know one other Santigold song; it's called Shove It and my lovely friend Annie gave it to me as part of a GG mix. Which is even more reason to love Santigold, because pretty much any song on GG is gold. A peek at the lyrics: "What I'm searching for/ to tell it straight I'm trying to build a wall.../ Stop trying to catch my eye/ I see you good you forced faker/ Just make it easy/ you're my enemy you fast talker".
Here's the cool video:

today's music

This is not a post about "today's music", though I could easily rant about that. No, this is just what I'm listening to RIGHT NOW, TODAY. AT THIS VERY MOMENT.

Season of Love by Shiny Toy Guns (it was on Gossip Girl!): Sounds nothing like Le Disko, the only other song of theirs that I know. I'm kinda surprised that it's the same group. But it's a nice song all the same, especially as it's nothing like that RENT song (shudder). It's a nice choice for the Gossip Girl season finale, seeing as it's about the nature of love. A glance at the lyrics: "Where did it come from/ and where does it go?/If it were right in front of me/ Would I know?". Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RItDWLvx8S0

Keep Breathing by Ingrid Michaelson (it was on Grey's Anatomy): I only know two of her songs, this and The Way I Am, but I'm beginning to really like Ingrid Michaelson. Anyway, this is a light, slightly airy song that makes me think it would be in some indie movie where the character sits in bed and it's raining outside...Listen to it for youself and decide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G92OgJ6ZGWc

Ego by Beyoncé ft. Kanye: This song just makes me laugh because it's so very "coy" and immature. Kanye sounds very much like an 11 year old boy giggling about penises and sex: "She like my big *giggle* ego". It makes me happy in the way Britney's If You Seek Amy makes me chuckle. Also, I want to use Beyoncé's line, "I consider myself a colossal big deal" , in real life somehow. With a straight face.

ps-

this might also go absolutely NOWHERE. I thought I'd give a heads up in case people got curious why it suddenly just stopped. I'm actually lazy enough that I might not be able to keep a blog, even for the summer...

I AM BORED

So. I've been home for 12 days exactly, and I've been going nuts since Day 3. This does not bode well for me, don't you agree? Everyone else is making blogs and whatnot, and I've been thinking of doing it for awhile, so why the hell not? Welcome to Stuck in the 703, the blog about whatever the hell pops into my head that I feel like sharing. For the ignorant among you, 703 is my area code. Yeah NOVA.

Oh yeah...this soo might totally turn into a Gossip Girl recapping/rant blog. Just warning you: I'm obsessed.
